STB Kodi 22 (Piers) with HW support
STB Kodi 22 (Piers) with HW support By @Captain
The basis of this overview is the current OpenATV 8.0 build configuration, the new libstbplayer backend code and the tests carried out so far on real boxes.
CONFIRMED – tested on a real box with STB-Kodi BACKEND – offered as a hardware codec by the current STB backend and machine configuration, but not yet tested for each codec on real hardware PARTIAL TEST – Hardware path has already been tested, points are still open OPEN – Build or platform-specific video output not yet fully tested
1. Broadcom (BCM)
The base set of the new BCM-STB player contains on all supported BCM platforms: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 Part 2, DivX 3/4/5, Xvid, H.263 and H.264/AVC The following information therefore only mentions the additional hardware codecs.
BCM7251S
Example boxes: Mutant HD51, AX HD51, AX Ultra, AirDigital H7/H17 and Xtrend ET1x000 Additional hardware codecs: HEVC/H.265, VC-1/WMV3, VP6, VP8, VP9 and FLV1/Sorenson Spark Booth: CONFIRMED at HD51. H.264, HEVC and VP9 work with hardware decoding. Audio, FF/RW and player controls work.
BCM7252S
Example boxes: Dreambox DM900/DM920, GigaBlue GB7252 and Vu+ Uno 4K/Uno 4K SE Additional hardware codecs: HEVC/H.265, VC-1/WMV3, VP6, VP8, VP9 and FLV1/Sorenson Spark Stand: PARTIAL TEST on the DM920. Hardware path and audio were running. The final R40 test for HDMI frame rate and VP9 is still open.
BCM7376
Example boxes: Vu+ Duo 4K, Duo 4K SE, Solo 4K and Ultimo 4K Additional hardware codecs: HEVC/H.265, VC-1/WMV3, VP6, VP8, VP9 and FLV1/Sorenson Spark Stand: CONFIRMED at the Vu+ Duo 4K SE. H.264 and HEVC up to 4K, audio and player control work.
BCM72604
Example boxes: Edision OS mini 4K, OS mio 4K, GigaBlue GB72604, Vu+Zero 4K and Dags 72604 Additional hardware codecs: HEVC/H.265, VC-1/WMV3 and VP9 Status: BACKEND build path is present. A test on real hardware is still pending.

Example boxes: Dreambox DM7080 and DM820 Additional hardware codecs: VC-1/WMV3, VP6, VP8 and FLV1/Sorenson Spark Not in the current driver profile: HEVC/H.265 and VP9 Booth: BACKEND DM820 was built as a MIPSel reference. DM7080 uses the same Kodi and driver path. And other BCM chipsets.
2. HiSilicon (HiSi)
The current HiSilicon backend code offers the following hardware codec set: MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 Part 2, H.263, H.264/AVC, HEVC/H.265, VC-1, VP8, VP9, and MJPEG. The maximum image size reported by the backend is 3840x2160.
HiSilicon 3798MV200
Example boxes: Octagon SF8008, AX/Mutant HD61, HD60/HD66, Pulse 4K, Multibox, AirDigital H9/H10, Dinobot U571/Viper4K V40 and more Hardware codecs: MPEG-1/2, MPEG-4 Part 2, H.263, H.264, HEVC, VC-1, VP8, VP9 and MJPEG Booth SF8008 and HD61/AX61: CONFIRMED Hardware and 4K path, low CPU load, FF/RW, audio track change and subtitles work. Booth U571/Viper4K V40: OPEN The box has a different native video output. The hardware player is recognized, but the image output is not yet fully adjusted.
HiSilicon 3798CV200
Example boxes: Dinobot U5 PVR, U53, U532 and U533 Hardware-Codecs des Backends: MPEG-1/2, MPEG-4 Part 2, H.263, H.264, HEVC, VC-1, VP8, VP9 und MJPEG Stand: OFFEN Das Backend ist vorgesehen. Ein echter Kodi-Boxentest steht noch aus.
3. Software fallback
A codec that is not in the hardware list of the respective platform is not promised as hardware decoding. Kodi can play it in software via FFmpeg if necessary. On older or weaker STB processors, software decoding for Full HD or 4K is usually not sufficient.
MKV, MP4, TS, and other containers are not the same as the video codec. Whether a file works completely also depends on the audio format, profile, level, bit depth, frame rate, and driver version.
Audio runs separately via the Kodi and ALSA paths. Player functions such as pause, seek, FF/RW, audio track change, subtitles and the Kodi OSD are retained in the new STB player.
